Assassin’s Creed Valhalla has added many new mini-games to its list of activities. There is drinking game, fishing, but you can also harvest resources or hunt legendary animals. But if you’ve had enough of it all, try Assassin’s Creed’s new game Valhalla Orlog!
What is Orlog in Assassin’s Creed Valhalla
Orlog is a newly invented game reminiscent of Gwent from The Witcher 3 and other card games from other games. But beware: before you know it, you’ll forget the life-giving story of Assassin’s Creed Valhalla and be spending all your time rolling the dice in Orlog. And the game doesn’t even give you any meaningful rewards or anything except to unlock more stuff that has to do with the game itself. Oh and that Orlog Champions trophy.
Basic Orlog Rules in Assassin’s Creed Valhalla
As with any game, Orlog’s goal is to defeat your opponent. In this case, you remove all their health points that are next to the player’s bowl (the gray stones).
The game begins with a toss to see who rolls the dice first, then chooses which dice to play. There is a maximum time you can cast and that’s three. The same goes for your opponent.
After the three throws, you have access to divine favor. The resolution phase is as follows and with each die you chose in that particular order and God’s favor as well of course. If you or your opponent don’t win, the next round begins. After the third roll, the game will automatically use the dice faces that were rolled and there are no more rolls after that. So whatever you roll last on the third try will be your dice.
Game resolutions can be very fast or last for a while. It depends on who you play and your own style of play.
There are five different dice faces you can roll in Orlog:
- Chopped: Deals 1 melee damage, can be blocked by helmet
- The arrow: Deal 1 ranged damage, can be blocked by shield
- Helmet: Block 1 melee damage from the ax
- Shield: Block damage at a distance from the boom
- Hand: Steal 1 God token from your opponent
- The dotted line: the dotted line gives you a God token
Dice are used to inflict damage, block it, or steal a God token from your opponent. Beside this, the dice can also be underlined with a dotted line. This means that you will have a God token at the start of the resolve phase, which you will need to spend on God’s favors (more on God’s favors later).
Please note the following: Dice with an orange border can have any symbol. For example, a hand die with an orange border not only gives you one token, but steals another from your opponent.
There are six unique dice. Each of them has two symbols with dotted borders. If you hover over the dice, you can see which dice have which options and determine whether you want to keep them or re-roll them.
What are the favors of God
God Favors is what makes Orlog so fun as they are some extra superpowers that you can add to the game and use the powers of the gods!
You stack a bunch of God tokens throughout your game, and you can have up to three God favors on you, each of which has up to three intensity levels.
Just imagine your opponent has six VPs and you have seven God tokens left. You can, in theory, focus on getting a single God token and defend your health points throughout the resolution. When you select a God Token, go for Thor’s Strike and choose the second level. This deals five damage to your opponent and you get eight tokens in return. And the game will be yours.
You can get God Favors by defeating Orlog players around the world in Assassin’s Creed Valhalla. Just go to a village, town or camp and there is usually an Orlog player waiting for you. You can find them by checking the two dice icon on your card.
These are the God Favors that are available and could potentially see more added to the roster.
- Thor’s Strike: Cause damage
- Idun rejuvenation: Health
- The power of Vidar: Remove opposing helmets
- Baldr’s invulnerability: Add helmets / shields for each helmet / shield already rolled up
- Skadi hunt: Add more arrows for each arrow already thrown
Note that each favor from God has different requirements for God tokens, so keep an eye on how much you need to spend for each level.
Explain the favor of God Thor
Using Thor’s power to gain an advantage is essential for a victory. So far in all games, Thor may have made a difference. Thor’s damage cannot be blocked by shields or helmets, so you get results for your effort for sure. The only way to counter Thor’s power is to use a divine power to heal their damage. And even then, the adversary is spending favors to offset your spending on favors. This puts them in a position to react to you, giving you a tactical advantage. Saving favors and spending them on Thor is a simple and straightforward path to victory.
If you can use Thor at first, wait until your opponent is down or below before you can even do five damage to you. If you manage to create such a distance between yourself and your opponent, feel free to go all-in and claim your victory.
It really depends on who your opponent is. The opponent’s AI is defined to vary their strategy. And just that creates your window to focus on just one type of damage. Rolling five axes for example and watching your opponent pick a helmet, two shields, two sprinkles and a hand fails to protect him from your onslaught. But to create such a situation, you will first need to roll your opponent so that you can customize an even more refined strategy if he starts out. A little math on game theory is therefore within reach. If your opponent chooses a shield, go for axes, if he chooses helmets, you choose arrows. And with Thor, your resolve can go really fast and will either do a lot of damage or put your opponent on the defensive.
So far, the Thor God Favor is the best for all games because it is almost impossible to counter. So use Thor’s power, but use it carefully and you can get this trophy very quickly.
Tips and tricks for winning at Orlog
There are limitless possibilities to earn Orlog in Assassin’s Creed Valhalla. Ubisofr has created a smart and unique system that relies on tactics, strategy and skill, and all of that mixed in with a slight hint of RNG.
Create a game plan to face your opponents
There is no real structure on how to win at Orlog and there are a variety of ways to play the game. You can go on the offensive or play very defensively while slowly stacking God tokens and you can even go all-in on God’s Tokens and collect lots of them. Since there isn’t one way or even one right way to play Orlog, create a game plan and stick to it. Be consistent in your games of Assasin’s Creed Valhalla Orlog.
The favors of God are essential to implement your strategy and here is how
Once you have determined your strategy, you need to make sure you choose the right favors from God before you jump into battle. For example, Thor’s strike is great once all you have to do is just deal damage. But Thor’s strike also costs a lot of God tokens compared to others. When you have a good number, pick the correct one for the match that suits your strategy and go in and make sure you win the match.
Keep track of your opponent’s movements in Orlog
Of course, God favors the bold but God also promotes the boldness of your opponent! So be on the lookout and check how many God Tokens your opponent has. If you can in any way frustrate your opponent by hijacking a divine token to make sure they can’t use a divine favor and at the same time you can deal a killing blow, then you should definitely go.
For example, if your opponent uses something that costs five tokens but you steal a few during the resolve and make sure they drop below five, Divine Favor will not succeed. You need to think quickly and figure out how many chips your opponent will have left, but at the same time, keep an eye on your own God chips.
How to counter in Orlog
The game is won or lost by the amount of damage you take, so you’ll want to adapt your strategies to take as little damage as possible. To do this, you try to counter your opponent every turn. If they drop an ax and arrow on the first dice roll, you make sure to select their counterparts to defend you. In this case, it’s the helmet and shield as two of your six rolls. Every point of health is essential, so make your resolve to count every turn.
If you manage to beat ALL Orlog players in Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, you will receive a trophy and achievement. Success counts, of course, in the percentage of completion of the game.
Best tactics to win at Orlog
One tactic that could help very well in Assassin’s Creed Valhalla’s Orlog is to simply boost your defenses as much as possible using shields and helmets while you stack divine tokens, then do as much damage as you can on the last turn using God Favors. and go for a total attack.
But as mentioned before: always keep an eye on your opponent’s dice rolls because you repeat, you lose. Tunnelvision is where things go wrong and you give your opponent a chance to let go. Try to counter any moves your opponent is trying to make.
Quick math should keep you from getting beaten just because of luck. it is better to defend and try to counter your opponent hard in the next round than to be defeated hoping for the best.
If you notice your opponent collecting God Tokens, make sure you are the one who keeps stealing them using the hand dice. But if their strategy is to continue using Idun’s Rejuvenation, focus on getting the Ax Dice and countering them with Vidar’s Might to remove the helmets. They may be forced to use the helmets because you are using your axes.
